Rarest of the Hang Hang family lost in fire

Postby hangjohnny » Sun Nov 18, 2018 6:51 pm

Yes .... This beautiful , and ultra rare specimen of Felix Rhoner's work (only two were made according to Felix) has been lost forever .
A fire ripped through 3 outbuildings in a rural part of British Columbia last week .... Among the many spiritual ,healing , and treasured items was The Panart Hang first generation Pelog tuning masterpiece ....I was in possession for 6 years ,before passing it on , and can attest to it's cranky nature... And bizarre sounds ... There was no such thing as a normal pattern created when you played this wacky , and wonderful pan ... I am devastated , and will always miss the thrill of raaazzz it spoke ...
RUST IN PEACE my beloved pelog pan . <3

:( Sad news!!!

Hmm.....I would say it would be an interesting task to try to bring it to life. Maybe it even sounds better after... you know, building these instruments, a big part of it is heat treatment....so I wouldnt loose the hope into it.

Please, if you were thinking in trowing it into garbage, im looking forward to try to bring it into life. Or give it to someone who really would love that...maybe Josh Riviera from Saraz!

I am traveling to the British Columbia interior for a benefit concert , and auction for my deer friend who lost so much in this devastating fire .
The Panart Pelog pan (now in two shells )will be a shock to behold for sure .... i have seen pictures , and other than the heat scoring , both shells look workable , so i hope to bring them back to Vancouver , if my friend is willing to let the pan go ....From there i will put it out to forum members (pan builders/tuners )to see if there is an adventurous artist with a love of the Hang willing to create a Phoenix from the fire ... My thinking is energy could be put in to create a new pan of character , and not necessarily sounding like an original Panart ...While leaving the obvious fire scoring as the finish ...I am kind of excited /apprehensive to attend the gathering .... Phoenix from the fire event ,but if I can help my talented artist friend ... I am there .

What a dramatic end... It's hard to believe it could even be restored after that. Let's hope!

I've often wondered where all the Hanghang were... F&S made so many 1st gens! I wonder how many got forgotten, lost, destroyed or thrown away over the years.

When I visited the fire sight ,the homeowner was not interested in spending any more money to resurrect this rare specimen, so I was obliged to just let it go... Sad ending for such a unique instrument
